Fiberglass is usually a type of material that is made of plastic which is reinforced using fibers of glass. These fibres are usually integrated in three different ways. The fibres of glass could be arranged in a random manner, made into a flat sheet or interwoven the same way like for a fabric.
In comparison to fibres of carbon, fiberglass is usually not expensive and is also better in terms of flexibility. The fiberglass is also known to be stronger than most of the metals. This material has been in production some hundreds of years back. The discovery of the material was, however, accidental rather than an intentional or purposed study. The accidental incident later led to the intended usage of the same method to come up with glass wool.
The first production of fibreglass led to production of wools of glass that were useful in insulation against heat. With the introduction of plastic resin to the glass wool, the properties of the fiberglass were changed a great deal. This minimized the insulation ability of the glass wool but it rendered it strong for use in structure and building.
The fiberglass material is usually made by putting a number of different materials in a large furnace until they melt.Thre manufacturing of this strong material usually involves the smelting of various components by putting them in large furnaces. The resulting molten material is then passed through minute designed holes. The next process is usually to coat the resulting material with a chemical substance. These rovings can be applied as they are or they can also be applied in the manufacture of other materials.
There is a material that can be produced from the manufactured rovings. The chopped strand mat is usually a type of strengthened material for fiberglass. It is usually made by laying glass fibers across each other in a random manner and holding them in place by the use of a binder. The production of the chopped stranded mat is usually done using technique known as hand lay up.
Fiberglass has quite a wide range of uses today. Storage tanks are one of the areas in which the fiberglass material is applied. These storage containers are mostly suitable in the keeping of chemical substances. This is as a result of the suitable aspects of the fiberglass material that make it usable for storage tanks for chemicals.
The other application is usually in house building. The fiberglass material is applied to a number of house components such as laminates on roof, doors, windows, chimneys and many more. There are many uses of the fiberglass in the current world.
